Making a Christmas wreath
If you also want to put the Christmas spirit in your house, making a Christmas wreath is easy to make! In this blog we explain how you can quickly and easily making a Christmas wreath.
Start with the base, you can tie it yourself with green. But you can also buy an attached wreath, which often does not make much difference in cost. We give you tips on how to build a wreath from the ground up and then decorate it. If you start with a tied wreath, you can skip the first part about tying the basic wreath.
What materials do you need for making a Christmas wreath.
For the base of your Christmas wreath
- Straw or iron base
- Spool of Wikeldaad
- Christmas green, nobilis, various conifers and possibly moss
For decorating your Christmas wreath
- Pine cones
- Dried fruit
- Christmas balls
- Ribbon
- Lights
- Other Christmas decorations (can be anything you like to put on them)
- Cinnamon stick and/or anise stars
Step 1: The base of your Christmas wreath
It is easiest to use a straw wreath as a basis, these are available in different sizes and already have some volume. This means you have to use less Christmas greenery. If you use an iron ring, you must first fill it up and give it volume.
- Cut your greenery into branches of about 10 cm
- Tie your wrapping wire to the wreath
Now start tying by placing the sprigs of Christmas greenery on the wreath in one direction (it doesn’t matter whether you tie clockwise or counterclockwise).
Every time you have placed some twigs on the surface, secure them by wrapping the wire around the wreath, pull the wire tight but not too tight. If you pull the wire too tight, you will not get any volume in your wreath. Repeat this until you have completed the Christmas greenery.
Step 2.1: Decorating it as a hanging Christmas wreath
If you are sure that you are going to hang the wreath, you can take this into account when decorating. If you are going to hang the wreath on a ribbon, start by attaching the ribbon.
You can also take this into account when dividing the decorations, it can look nice if you attach some decoration to the bottom of the wreath. For example, a few large Christmas baubles on a ribbon, a Christmas bell or Santa Claus, simply divide the other decorations over the wreath. If you want peace in the wreath, make groups with decorations. If the wreath is a bit messier, divide the decorations randomly over the wreath.
Step 2.2: Decorate as a horizontal Christmas wreath
If you are going to place the wreath on a table or cupboard, take the placement of your decoration into account. If you place the wreath on a tray because you want to place a lantern or a large candle in it, make sure that there are no large decorations on the inside of the wreath. These can get in the way when placing the wind light or candle. Furthermore, you divide the decorations as you want, randomly or in groups. If you want to make the wreath as an Advent wreath, start with the four candle holders and distribute them parallel over the wreath.
